So what is a wireless bridge anyway?
In simple terms a wireless bridge is a device that allows two or more complete networks of users to transparently communicate to one another over long distances without wires. These networks can be in the same building but are normally in either adjacent buildings or with the proper antennas and line of sight bridges can even connect networks up to 30 miles apart. Wireless bridges connect to the wired network through the Ethernet port and replicate that data to a remote network bridge or access point via 802.11a/b/g wireless (Wi-Fi) protocol.

Point to Point (ptp) Bridging:
A point to point topology is the simplest to configure and connects two networks in two separate locations, normally a remote building or warehouse, via one wireless bridge in each location.

Point to Multi-point (point to multipoint, ptmp) bridging:
A point to Multipoint topology wirelessly connects multiple locations together allowing them to share the same network resources. The bridge at the main, central, location is called the root bridge or base station bridge and all data passing between the wireless bridge clients must pass through the root bridge first. These point-to-multipoint networks are used in wireless internet service providers (WISP), large corporate campuses, distribution facilities, school districts, public safety applications and many others...

What do I need to build a Point to Point Bridge Link?

Line of sight between the two locations. You may need to install a pole or tower on your roof top in order to achieve this. A site survey is recommended before installation. Select a wireless bridge: Here are some things to consider when selecting a wireless bridge.

Distance: Distance will determine what gain antenna will be required and if you need an external antenna or if an integrated antenna will be sufficient.

Wireless protocol: Do you want to use a bridge base on 802.11 standards so that you have interoperability with other bridge manufacturers or would you like something with a protocol proprietary to a particular vendor? There are some added security benefits when using a proprietary over a standard protocol.

Indoor or Outdoor: Indoor wireless bridges are less expensive but you will have to buy quite a bit of LMR-400 cable to connect to the outdoor antenna. This adds a great deal of signal loss and in the end you will need a higher gain antenna to compensate. An outdoor bridge can be placed right next to the antenna and therefore cuts down on the amount of cable you need to buy as well as the amount of signal loss.

Select a wireless antenna: If the bridge you selected does not already have an integrated antenna you will need to choose one now. For point to point links we suggest a directional panel, grid or solid parabolic dish antennas.

Peripherals: You will need to select the appropriate lightning arrestors and RF antenna cables to get you connected and protected.

Double it: Now double the amount of hardware you selected so that you have the identical setup on both sides.

Installation:
Finally, select a professional installer in your area to run the appropriate cables, install any required poles or towers, align the antennas and configure the radios. Uninstall Windows Media Player 10 and Start Enjoying Your Media Again

Windows Media Player 10 has been full of bugs from Microsoft since they offered it as a download from their site. Windows Media Player 9 was nice and simple. Windows Media Player 10 is way too complex and feature-rich that it has taken away from the simpleness of version 9 and ruined itself. Another great media player is Winamp but we won't go into that right now.

If you have installed Windows Media Player 10, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was on your computer before installing Windows Media Player 10.

To roll back from Windows Media Player 10 to a previous version, do the following:

In Control Panel (Category View), click Add or Remove Programs.
Click Remove a program

Now do one of the following: If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, select the Show updates check box (at the top of the list), click Windows Media Player 10 (in the Windows Updates section), and then click Change/Remove.

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier, click Windows Media Player 10, and then click Change/Remove.

As of writing this many people have found bugs in WMP10 that make it unavailble for common audio and video files. If you find that WMP10 is crashing or giving you errors and you cant play your media files. Uninstall it with these directions and stay happy.

Be like the rest of the world and install Winamp.

Once In A Life Time, Once-a-Day

We all experience it. The feeling of doing something that so few people have ever done that you will be able to brag and talk about it even to your grand kids. We are lucky if we experience this once every few years or even just a few times during our lives.

Maui, Hawaii is a unique place. It is in the middle of the Pacific ocean, part of the united states and is accessible to anyone in just a few short hours of travel. You don't need a passport to get here and you can stay as long as you like. The greatest part though is that it is absolutely nothing like the continental US.

When you boil it down it is one of the only ways to escape everyday life without leaving the country. More importantly you can experience these "once in a life time" moments on a daily basis, so if you stay for a week expect seven unforgettable experiences.

Lets start by getting into a few of things you can do, that I guarantee you will never forget.

Sunrise On A Dormant Volcano
Maui is in the tropics, it is always present but with elevation comes the cold. You wake up one morning, well before the break of dawn, after arriving to Maui, throw on some shorts and a t shirt, jump in the car and start heading up to the top of Haleakala (Maui's dormant volcano.) Once you get to the top (at 4:00 in the morning) you realize it is 50 degrees and you're cold! Soon after you're ready to get back in the car you see the sun start to peek into the sky. The sky explodes into colors you have never seen before and now the cold seems to only amplify the different shades of red, yellow orange and blue! The drive back down is exhausting, but I guarantee you won't forget this day.

Diving With Sea Turtles
The next morning you get up and head over to Polo Beach on the south shore of Maui in Kihei. You have already rented some snorkel gear and are ready to jump into the water. The water is calm because it is still early and you start swimming out, not far, only for about four minutes. The water gets deep but it is clean and clear as ever, you see reef and fish everywhere! Seconds later you see an enormous turtle out of nowhere cursing along the bottom of the reef. Seems too easy doesn't it? We have tons of turtles here, there is even a popular dive spot known as "Turtle Town." These creatures are some of the most amazing animals to swim with and to see in the wild.

There are two events that you will never forget. We haven't even started talking about hiking in to a rainforest's to jump off an ancient waterfall or driving through a barren lava field to snorkel where you can hear whales singing underwater. No matter how long you stay on Maui you can experience an unforgettable event everyday of your stay with little or no effort. More importantly you don't have to pay anyone to do any of this.

Connecting Your Secured LinkSys WRT54GC To Your Windows XP Laptop Or Desktop

If you followed along with the first article, then you are ready to set-up your PC to access the secure wireless connection.

This article does not go into hardening your PC against other threats, you should always make sure you are using a firewall, virus scanner and/or spam blocking software.

Now that you have successfully configured your LinkSys WRT54GC the next step is to configure your PC so that you can access the secured connection.

This is easy to do, and only requires a few additional steps.

First you should have an icon on your status bar that looks like a computer - it shows the wireless network connection. When you move your mouse over top of it, you should see the wireless information for the connection.

Since your connection will not be established, there may be an X or SLASH through the icon. Not to worry, setting up this connection is very easy.

First step is to double-click on the icon. This will bring up the WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION STATUS window.

Next on this window, click on the PROPERTIES button. This will display another window that reads WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION PROPERTIES on the window bar.

Click on the tab that reads WIRELESS NETWORKS.

Since your network should already be set-up, you can highlight the entry and click on the PROPERTIES button - it will light-up once you select your network.

On this screen and this tab (marked ASSOCIATION) there will be several fields, one of which is called Network name (SSID). This field is not accessible, but will list the name of your network.

Then there is another block of options under WIRELESS NETWORK KEY. This is what you need to update in order to access your secured wireless network.

The first item is the NETWORK AUTHENTICATION. Provided youve kept your PC updated and have all the latest updates and patches, when you click on this list box you will have several options available to you: OPEN, SHARED, WPA and WPA-PSK.

Select the one that you used on your LinkSys WRT54GC wireless access point. Chances are if you followed part 1 of this article then you should select WPA-PSK.

Next you will select the DATA ENCRYPTION method. Choices available to you will be: TKIP or AES.

Once again you will select the one which you selected on your LinkSys WRT54GC wireless access point. TKIP and AES are both as strong, however AES may slow down your internet connection from your PC to the access point since it goes through more encryption methods.

In my experiences I have noticed that when I use TKIP I retain a 108 Mbps speed to the access point, whereas with AES it drops in half to 54 Mbps. However Ive decided to stay with AES.

Once you have selected the appropriate DATE ENCRYPTION method the next step is to select the NETWORK KEY and enter this into two spots: NETWORK KEY and CONFIRM NETWORK KEY.

The network key is the SAME key you entered into your wireless access point (the LinkSys WRT54GC). If this is a long string and youve saved the string (not recommended for long-term, only during your initial set-up and configuration) then you can simply CUT the string from the document and PASTE it into the required fields! Otherwise you will need to manually type in the 63 character string - which may not be an easy task to complete.

Enter the string into the required fields - NETWORK KEY and CONFIRM NETWORK KEY then click on the OK button.

When the previous window opens up (WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION PROPERTIES) click the OK button again.

Finally click CLOSE on the WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION STATUS.

It may take a few seconds to a few minutes for your PC to synchronize to the access point, however once it does you will be able to surf the web securely between your PC and your access point. As well, it will be very difficult for the average individual to hack into your wireless connection and steal your broadband access!

It really is that simple, that everyone should be protecting their wireless connection. Not only are you ensuring nobody can use your broadband access, but data that is sent between your PC an the access point is secured as well - you wont be sending out your account details un-encrypted anymore just waiting for someone with the smarts to capture that data and use it for their own means.

Before we finish, would you like to see how many secured or unsecured connections are in your area? Yes, you can see this easily with Windows own tools. Double-click on the icon we mentioned earlier in this article. This will bring up the WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION STATUS window.

Click on the VIEW WIRELESS NETWORKS button.

If youve done everything correctly you will not see your connection in the list but you will see all the other connections around you (for those individuals that did not disable the broadcast of their SSID) plus youll be able to see who has encrypted their connection fully and who is using basic encryption.

Those that are using WPA or stronger - those will be tough to crack or hack into. Those that are not - with the right tools (all available freely over the Internet) you could access their wireless connection with a bit of work and steal their broadband access (though I highly recommend that you do not).

Setting the appropriate security measures is very easy, and just common sense. Like you would not leave your bank statement in a public place - you should ensure that your computer(s) are secured to prevent your private information being given to the public.

Some Tips For African Safari Newbies

I was chatting with my friend Brian over breakfast recently; we hadn't caught up for such a long time. Brian is an international pilot and spends quite a good deal of his time overseas. "Where have you been for the last month?" I enquired.

"Africa mate, Africa," he replied.

I was surprised by this..."I thought you just flew to Europe and the U.K."

"No. I wasn't working. I was on safari mate," he said.

I was surprised.."Safari! I know you're adventurous but I didn't think you were that game.

I've been thinking of doing a trip like that. How was it?"

"Brilliant mate, absolutely brilliant. If you've been thinking of doing an African Safari trip don't think too long about it. It was simply stunning," Brian said excitedly. His tone suddenly picked up. "When were you thinking of going?"

"I'm not sure. Have you got any suggestions for a safari newbie?" I asked.

"Sure," he replied. "Summer time is good."

"Where did you go?" I asked.

"We went to Bongani on the edge of Kruger National Park in South Africa," Brian responded.

"It was perfect for us. We stayed at the Bongani Mountain Lodge..." I interrupted quickly.

"Mountain Lodge! I thought it was a safari. Weren't you supposed to be roughing it?"

"I was mate," he said. "You know me. Anything below 5 star and I'm roughing it!" We both laughed. Brian had a dry sense of humour.

"Okay," I said. "Give me an African Safari preparation list. What are the things I should prepare before I go?"

Brian gave his chin one of those pensive mood type rubs. He paused for a while. Meantime I ushered over the waitress.."Two more flat whites please." Brian looked up at me and in his usual dry Aussie tone started giving me a checklist.

"Don't get too carried away with taking a heap of stuff with you," he said. "Travel Light.

In summer you just need light clothing. Winter time, the days are warm but the nights get cold so you'll need something warm. Don't go overboard though."

"What about a hat?" I asked. Brian looked at me as if I was blonde, which I'm not; not by hair color anyway.

"Mate," he said a little sarcastically. "You're in Africa. It's hot. Of course you need a hat."

I tried to maintain a little dignity.."What about mozzies?"

Brian looked at me a with a little more approval this time. "Ahh! Mosquitoes! They can be a real pain. Definitely need insect repellant. Mate, there are mozzies over there that are so big they'll pick you up and carry you away."

Our coffees had arrived. I reviewed what Brian had told me so far. "Light clothing; something warmer in winter, hat, insect repellant... sounds simple so far. Is there anything else," I asked.

"Oh yes mate," he replied in a nonchalant fashion. "There sure is. Take sunscreen. You'll need it. Take loose change when you're on the road particularly in South Africa. Great freeways but in a four hour drive to Kruger National Park we copped seven tolls!"

"Brutal mate," I said.

"Yeah, sure was. I thought I was back home in Sydney. I wouldn't carry a wallet though," he said taking a sip of coffee. "Why not?" I asked.

"Well, I wouldn't carry a wallet in an urban area. Let's just say it's safer not too."

"Got you," I nodded. "Is that it?"

"One more thing," he said. "Just make sure you have id with you all the time. You won't believe how many people get caught without their passports on them. On last year's safari I got taught a neat little trick. One sure fire way not to forget your passport."

"What's that," I asked.

Brian finished his coffee, wiped his mouth and said.."Well mate, before you go to bed at night, put your passport and one shoe in the room safe or somewhere out of sight..."

"What? I butted in. "Did you say one of your shoes?"

Brian still had his mouth wide open. Then told me.."Stop interrupting!"

"Okay. Sorry... can't help myself," I said apologetically. Brian continued..

"The reason you put one of your shoes away is because when you're getting dressed in the morning; when you remember you've put one of your shoes away you'll also remember it's with your passport."

"You're a genius mate," I said with a grin on my face. "That's why you get paid the big bucks."

Brian thanked me. And then said.. "And I'm not charging much for this advice. Just pay the tab and we'll call it even."

Navigating Spectrum With Cognitive Radio

What with the buzz around the FCCs auction rules on the upcoming 700 MHz sale few noticed the Commissions geek squad also flew its Kitty Hawk into white spaces between TV broadcast spectrum bands that same July. The test flight wasnt spectacular or anything but like the Wright brothers bird it quietly made history.

While the FCC commissioners were lining up to announce final edicts on managing the 700 MHz auction, their Office of Engineering and Technology made its own announcement on initial testing results for a couple of prototype devices that might be used in television white spaces. Looking beyond the Google ?Verizon squabble that took center stage in the auction related media coverage the second announcement was the more important one as it charts a course outside the box to decide where we go once these auctions have played out. The FCC hoped these tests would lead to white spaces (unused by TV broadcasters) being made available for unlicensed use by opportunistic (cognitive radio) devices that would sense when frequencies were in use by television or other signals. Two prototypes were tested one from Microsoft and the other by a consortium lead by Philips Electronics. Things didnt go too well and the FCC concluded the devices werent sensitive enough. But then the Kitty Hawk just flew 12 seconds on its first flight.

To understand the logic behind cognitive radio (CR) lets stay with the airplane analogy a bit. As things stand today we treat radio spectrum like real estate parceling bands off to licensees for their exclusive use as operators. Such allocation was fine in the good old days but now wears thin in the face of an overwhelming demand for radio space by contending applications. However radios keep getting smarter and its time we began treating spectrum like the skies where theres no technical reason why an airplane cant fly amidst congested air traffic as long as navigational rules are followed.

The funny thing is that the perceived spectral congestion is more a function of our inefficient method of parsing bandwidth to licensees than due to any real irresolvable contention. Measurements carried out by the IEEE on frequency bands below 3 GHZ conducted from January 2004 to August 2005 showed that only about 5.2% of the spectrum was actually in use in the US in any given location and at any given time. Even more interesting was the revelation that heavy spectrum utilization often takes place in unlicensed bands while licensed bands often experience low (e.g. TV bands) or medium (e.g. some cellular bands) utilization. Its safe to say these American studies on spectrum utilization may also hold true in other countries. The results should resonate especially so in countries like India where the whole matter of allocating spectrum is increasingly fraught with a liberalizing Regulator, a truculent cellular lobby and nonplussed government officials drawing battle lines.

These alarming measurements suggesting spectrum under-utilization in the midst of a perceived scarcity coupled with recent advances in radio technology prompted the FCC to test CR and see whether base stations and Customer Equipment (CPEs) could competently connect and stay within unused white bands in spectrum allocated to TV broadcast.

There was some patronizing smugness at the cellular establishment with the sub-par performance but its a nascent technology and can only improve. Lets pray it does because selling off chunks of spectrum doesnt work anymore for anyone other than the cellular operators. Todays artificial scarcity impacts a more universal telecommunications service deployment, especially broadband. Education, health care, communications, public safety and leisure are all casualties.

For those not blinkered there appears little choice but to gradually do away with reserving spectrum and instead have service providers deploy equipment with radio characteristics adaptive to the real-time conditions of the environment, which is what cognitive or adaptive radio is all about.

When mastered, CR technology would utilize the large amount of spectrum lying unused in reserved lots while not interfering with other incumbent devices in these frequency bands already licensed for specific uses. Folks, this is huge. Globally. In its September 2007 recommendations on spectrum allocation & pricing the Indian regulator (TRAI) mentions eventually doing away with licensed spectrum management in favor of well defined rules of interaction once cognitive radio becomes real. The TRAI uses ocean lanes to make the point I made earlier with air traffic but I wont quibble because the message clearly comes across. CR is happening.

More so because IEEE, the folks who brought you WiFi and WiMax, has announced work on CR type air interface under the 802.22 group of standards. It beats cellular & WiMax on range because this specific air interface standard works in ?or rather in between - the VHF & UHF portions of the radio spectrum allotted to TV broadcast. This end of the spectrum has better propagation characteristics than the upper bands allotted to cellular, WiMax or WiFi and hence the impressive range.

The reason for focus at the lower end of the spectrum is primarily because the broadcasters are about to release these bands (the reason for the auction) as they go digital. The FCC can therefore play around here far easier than anywhere close to the cellular establishments spectral property. But unless you fervently believe in the tooth fairy, know that for CR technology to worm its way and eventually squat on unused cellular real estate is only a matter of time.

Broadband + New Algorithm = Broadband x 200

Broadband users who are fed up with the slow speeds from their provider but have been told their existing copper telephone line can't deliver a faster service may be in for a pleasant surprise, thanks to a revolutionary new mathematical formula.

Australian PhD graduate John Papandriopoulos claims to have has invented a way to turbo-charge current ADSL broadband speeds, enabling speeds of up to 200 times faster.

The system uses new algorithms reduce the effect that cross chatter has on internet streams that share the same physical copper telephone line.

According to Dr Papandriopoulos, his new algorithm could offer broadband speeds of up to an impressive 250Mbps on existing telecoms infrastructure. This would be ideal, given the UK's current state of broadband. The majority of broadband users receive less than half the broadband speed advertised as "up to 8Mbps".

Using these algorithms dramatically increased download speeds, allowing broadband users the ability to download data at a rate of roughly 30Mbps. A practical example of this new speed is that you using it would allow a full-length DVD movie to be downloaded in less than three minutes.

Dr Papandriopoulos is currently applying for patents in both the US and his native Australia to implement the new algorithms into worldwide broadband internet servers. If all goes well, his invention may well become one of the hottest properties amongst broadband service providers.

Not only would this improve broadband at a world scale but would also save billions. BT are currently in developments of BT21CN (BT 21st Century Networks) which would consist of installing fibre optics to improve broadband speeds to up to 24Mbps at a cost of 10bn.

If this algorithm was to be implemented into the current network then BT would not require upgrading just yet as in theory the speeds would achieve significantly higher speeds without the need for fibre optics.

Britain is in much need of broadband improvement and Dr John Papandriopoulos may just have our answer.

The ingenious internet start-ups by young entrepreneurs have dramatically changed our culture.

Everyone takes their digital equipment with them wherever they go, they SMS, Google, Skype, and network in online communities.

Advertisers are keeping up, and with a stretch of the imagination, are permeating online worlds across broad platforms. Anywhere there's a connection, there's an advertising message. Except, now advertisers can interact and respond to user input all the way down the line.

For example, Pudding Media offers an internet phone service similar to Skype, except it's at no cost. The reason: Pudding Media listens in on phone conversations by automated voice recognition software, so they can display advertising on the user's computer screen in direct response to the user's conversation. For instance, if the conversation is about movies, a list of movies, reviews, and show-times pops up on the user's screen. If the conversation is about a holiday in France, the user gets a list of web links for travel sites relating to France.

Relative advertising that rides on the back of personal conversations is an effective way to interest a consumer in their downtime, but what's even more effective is personal recommendations.

Facebook encourage their members to plug the brands they like to their online "friends." So if a member (who participates in the scheme called Social Advertising) enjoys a movie, Blockbuster attaches an ad for that movie, along with a profile photo of the member. The member posts it as their personal recommendation to his or her "friends" - whether they want to receive it or not.

Relative advertising puts a new slant on the word 'social networking,' and opens up a relationship between the consumer and the advertiser. This interaction allows the consumer to gain control over what products are promoted, and since there's no monetary exchange, personal choice is the motivator.

It's not unusual for members of YouTube to post advertising online when they like the content. Like YouTube member "Piu" who posted Pepsi's ad featuring Britany Spears, Beyonce, and Pink. The ad has already been viewed by 7, 999,280 people, and 19-year-old "Piu" is given rock-chick status. One feedback on her YouTube homepage reads: "I love your 'We will Rock You' video. It was soooo totally awesome. You rock!" It's as if "Piu" made the ad herself.

When 18-year-old Nick Haley posted his ad on YouTube, which he did make himself, he got more than just feedback. Created purely from a love of his iPod, Nick's ad demonstrates iPod's easy-touch functions set to the song Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex by a Brazilian band, CSS. One YouTube viewer, an Apple executive, contacted Nick and now Nick's ad has been remade for Apple, and is shown universally on TV networks. This story sends amateur filmmakers running to make ads knowing advertisers are scanning online communities closely and talent spotting.

Advertisers on MySpace are also busy scouring online communities. MySpace introduced a program, called HyperTargeting, which gives its big advertisers access to member's profile information and web pages. Armed with this information, the advertiser now has the ability to deliver advertising directly to members, and related to member's individual interests and tastes.

HyperTargeting is a marketing intelligence tool. The quick access of gathering marketing intelligence online, not only changes the creation and development of an advertiser's campaign, but also has the potential to change the product. Customization is giving mass produced products an individualistic style.

Dell, a company that began its career customizing computers to consumer's individual needs, now, in the face of new frontiers, has created a virtual factory in the online community Second Life. Here, a consumer can build, and customize a computer to his or her needs, then buy it for real.

And, how about authoring your own cookbook? Conde Nast has just introduced Tastebook.com, which gives consumers the ability to design and edit their own cookbook online. Users select content from a library of recipes, adding some from their own stash of favourites; the user designs the cover from a selection of photographs; then signs off by putting puts his or her name on the cover.

In a deeply gratifying way advertisers and users have both found themselves in a win-win situation; they both like the flexibility offered online: it's self-serve, it's normally at a low cost of entry, and the content can be tweaked or improved along the way. Advertisers get the chance to aim their advertising dollars to specific demographic profiles, geographical areas, times, genres, and channels; and users get to film, direct, act, edit, and star in front of an audience online.
